Studio progress, October 19

Mittens the Kittens rebuilt all nine boss fights around one loop, AFTERSHOCK took its short name, and Reign of Valtherin gave every spell its own look.

Main focus

MITTENS THE KITTENS Lead game

  • All nine boss fights now share one loop: four hairballs from either cat leave the dog dizzy for about three seconds, a jump on his head lands a hit, and three hits win the fight.
  • Two fixes for couch play: jumping straight up after getting off Samus no longer drops a cat back into her saddle, and a partner can no longer get stuck in her saddle short of the boss room.
  • All 24 stages were rendered again from the same 136 camera spots and judged afresh. Of the 88 problems the last review listed, 60 are fixed.
  • 13 automated runs, solo and two cat, cleared all 24 stages with 0 errors in every run, and every valid run beat all nine bosses through the new loop with no help.

AFTERSHOCK

  • The game is now called simply AFTERSHOCK. The world map header reads AFTERSHOCK, and the extra line under the title in the credits is gone, so the wordmark stands on its own.
  • The window title and the save location keep the old longer name on purpose, so existing saves stay where they are. The change is compiled but has not been seen running yet.

REIGN OF VALTHERIN Lead game

  • Every spell now takes its colours and matter from its element and is cast from a pixel art magic circle at the hero's feet: a plain ring for the first spells, a dense sigil for the most demanding. 100 spells across 9 elements now draw their own looks.
  • A shader bug made every glowing particle ignore its own colour, so slashes, sparks and spells all bloomed flat white. Filming each attack frame by frame found it, and a one line fix gave every effect its real colour.
  • Regular enemies now have five hit reactions picked at random instead of a flash, and thirteen enemy attacks that used to fly with no picture now fly as coloured comets pointed at their targets.
  • Weapon mastery now runs to level 10, with a weapon art learned at levels 5 and 10, and 1,894 automated checks pass.
